Kate Reid from Dead Weight
In Dead Weight Suzanne Pleschette plays Helen Stewart, who witnesses a murder from a sailboat in the harbor. Her disapproving mom is played by Kate Reid. The interesting birthday fact here is that Suzanne Pleshette was born on January 31st, 1937, and Kate Reid was born on November 4th, 1930...so Kate Reid was only a bit more than 6 years older than Suzanne Pleshette in real life. Pretty young mom.
Reid was born in London, though her parents were Canadian and she grew up in Canada.
She had a long career beyond Columbo, and was a distinguished stage actress, though most American audiences might recognize her most from her recurring role on Dallas.
Candidate for Crime premieres
On November 4th, 1973 Columbo fans meet Nelson Hayward, an aspiring senator with a charming but boozy wife. When his overbearing campaign manager tries to interfere with the affair Hayward is having with his wife's pretty young secretary, Hayward kills him.
Great episode - one of my favorites.
