Happy Birthday John Cassavetes
Peter Falk's good friend, collaborator, and one-time guest star John Cassavetes was born December 9th, 1929 in New York, City.
Falk and Cassevetes had a long friendship and worked together as often as they could. Falk even talked him into starring in Season 2's opener Etude in Black as the murderous conductor, Alex Benedict, even though Cassavetes wasn't very interested in doing television at the time.
Cassavetes was married to actress Gena Rowland for 35 years. Rowland turned in a Columbo guest appearance herself as Elizabeth Van Wyck, the wheelchair bound wife in Playback. (She did not use a wheelchair in real life)
Cassavetes died in 1989, of cirrhosis of the liver, at only 59 years old.
