365 Days of Columbo: February 27th

The premiere of Murder, Smoke, and Shadows

On February 27th, 1989 the second episode of Season 8 hit the airwaves. Murder, Smoke, and Shadows was a big effort from the Columbo crew just getting the series back on its feet after the long hiatus.

The good Lieutenant is hot on the trail of hot shot filmmaker Alex Brady (modeled a bit after Steven Spielberg, perhaps?).

Not my favorite episode, though it had a lot of good moments.

Happy birthday to Alan Fudge

Alan Fudge is one of those actors you might not recognize by name, but when you see him you go "Oh, that guy!" Columbo fans would recognize him as Cooper's dad (the one who threatens to throw him out of the house) in Columbo Goes to College, as Riley Greenleaf's lawyer in Publish or Perish, and as CIA recruiter Mr. Harrow in Columbo Goes to the Guillotine.

He was born Feburary 27th, 1944 in Wichita, Kansas.

Happy birthday Lieux Dressler

Some of you are going...who? OK, probably most of you. She was Leo Gentry's wife in Death Lends a Hand.

Lieux was born Feburary 27th, 1930.

Happy birthday Michael Fox (No, not that one)

Perhaps Michael Fox's greatest claim to fame is that he's the reason that the more famous Michael J. Fox needed to use a "J" as his middle initial when he worked. The actor's guild doesn't allow multiple actors to have the exact same name, so when the younger Michael Fox started acting, he had to add the "J" to distinguish himself. (The younger Fox's middle initial is actually "A" but he wasn't comfortable being "Michael A. Fox")

On screen, Fox was best known as Saul Feinberg for 268 episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful.

For Columbo fans, though, Michael Fox had an occasional role as Dr. Benson, the veteranarian who took care of Dog in Season 2's Etude in Black and The Most Dangerous Match.

He was born February 27th, 1921 in Yonkers, NY.

The end of the Sea Palace

We have one kind of sad anniversary today too. On February 27th, 2016, an abandoned cruise ship called the Ocean Dream sank off the coast of Thailand. The Ocean Dream was better known to Columbo fans as the Sea Palace, from season 4's Troubled Waters.

A sad end...
