365 Days of Columbo: May 17th

We have a couple of Columni birthdays to celebrate today!

A double dose of Backes

First up, Alice Backes. Many Columbo fans will recognize her as Mrs. Moyland, the housekeeper, in Negative Reaction.

...but you may not realize (I didn't) that she returns to Columbo in season 13 as Mrs. Jenkins, the buoyant mother-of-the-bride in A Trace of Murder.

Alice was born May 17th, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah and made the rounds of most of the popular TV shows from the 60s, 70s, and 80s including Barney Miller; Welcome Back, Kotter; and Maude.

During World War II she served in the WAVES.

She passed away March 15th, 2007.

Nope...just Dirkson

Douglas Dirkson was born on May 17th, 1943, in Lewiston, Montana. Columbo fans remember him as the charming and helpful aircraft mechanic, Jeff, in Swan Song.

Other folks might know him better as councilman Burlington Cranston in Footloose.

As far as I can tell he's still alive, though he doesn't have an acting credit since 2004.
