We lost Peter

Peter Falk passed away in his home in Beverly Hills, CA. on June 23rd, 2011 from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.

The Legendary Michael William Lally

Other than Peter Falk himself, nobody has appeared in more episodes of Columbo than Michael Lally . ( Credit to Vagebond's Columbo Screenshots for many of the shots in this post ) So ingrained in Columbo lore is he that when you go to his IMDB page the picture that appears is Peter Falk, not Lally himself. In real life he and Falk were good friends, and Lally was apparently on-set pretty much every filming day of all of the original episodes, even the ones he didn't actually appear in. Lally was born June 1st, 1900, which means this year would have been his 123rd birthday. He passed away February 15th, 1985, and aside from his 25 credited appearances on Columbo he had FOUR-HUNDRED and SIXTY other acting credits, virtually all of them as "Man at airport", "Party guest", or "Bartender". TLDR: Yes. This question comes up WAY too often in the Columbo forums and I get tired of answering it, so I figured I'd just write this post which we can share anytime it comes up in the future. Columbo undoubtedly exaggerates about his various nieces, nephews, and even in-laws, but there's no serious doubt that he's married. Even though we never actually see her. What is Columbo's first name?

This one comes up from time to time as well, and the answer (unlike whether he had a wife or not ) is a little harder to pin down. He's not Philip Columbo Let's dispense with this one first. The Trivia Encyclopedia had an entry that claimed Columbo's first name was Philip, but that was a copyright trap. Trivia games, and cartographers, sometimes do that...create a unique, fictitious, "fact" that they insert into their content so that if anybody copies it later they can use that unique falsehood to prove copyright infringement in court. At one time it was said that the Thomas Brothers map guide had a small fake street or label on each and every page for exactly this reason. The fake street would be something inconsequential, a cul-du-sac or alleyway perhaps, so that nobody would be likely to actually try and drive on it in real life.
