365 Days of Columbo: August 25th

Rumor has it, it's Mel Ferrer's birthday!

Born Melchor Gastón Ferrer, better known as Mel Ferrer, he was born on August 25, 1917, in Elberon, New Jersey.

Ferrer was born to a Cuban-born surgeon and a Manhattan socialite. He attended Princeton University and began his career in summer stock theatre at the age of 15. After Princeton, he worked as an editor for a small Vermont newspaper and wrote a children's book titled "Tito's Hats."

Columbo fans will remember him as sleezy tabloid journalist Jerry Parks - whose car was burned up (with poor Jean inside) by Nora Chandler in Requiem for a Falling Star.

Beyond Columbo

Ferrer made his Broadway debut as an actor in 1940 and later transitioned to film. He gained prominence with notable film hits such as "Scaramouche" (1952), "Lili" (1953), and "Knights of the Round Table" (1953). He also starred opposite his then-wife, Audrey Hepburn, in "War and Peace" (1956) and produced her film "Wait Until Dark" (1967).

In addition to his Hollywood success, Ferrer acted extensively in European films and appeared in several cult hits, including "The Antichrist" (1974), "The Suspicious Death of a Minor" (1975), "The Black Corsair" (1976), and "Nightmare City" (1980).

Ferrer was married five times, most notably to Audrey Hepburn from 1954 to 1968. He had six children, including Sean Hepburn Ferrer. Mel Ferrer passed away on June 2, 2008, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 90.
