John David Ashton (February
22, 1948 – September 26, 2024) is best known to most people as Sgt. John
Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop
films — but Columbo fans will spot him decades earlier in the Season 4 favorite
Negative Reaction.
Ashton plays Calvin MacGruder, the real estate agent who sells Deschler the ranch. It’s a small role, but it’s a neat bit of trivia when you’re doing a rewatch and suddenly realize: “Wait… is that Taggart?!”
Happy Birthday Jonathan Demme
Jonathan Demme (born February 22, 1944) directed one of the
most offbeat entries of the classic run: Murder Under Glass. Before he was an Oscar-winning filmmaker (The Silence of the Lambs,
Philadelphia, Stop Making Sense, and more), Demme stepped into the rotating
Mystery Movie world and gave Columbo a glossy, foodie-flavored murder story.
Even if Murder Under Glass isn’t everyone’s top-tier
favorite, it’s unmistakably stylish — and it’s always fun to say you’ve watched
a Columbo episode directed by the same guy who later unleashed Hannibal Lecter
on the world.
Happy Birthday André Lawrence
Canadian actor André Lawrence (born February 22, 1939) pops
up in Season 5’s A Case of Immunity as Youseff Alafa, the Suarian Legation’s doomed chief of security. Unfortunately he's dead less than 4-1/2 minutes into the episode.
