Happy birthday to Jack Laufer!
Jack Laufer was born on August 9, 1953 in Israel.
Columbo fans know him as Gerald “Gerry” Winters, the unfortunate victim in 1994’s Butterfly in Shades of Grey. Gerry is a former employee of domineering radio personality Fielding Chase and a close friend of Chase’s adopted daughter, Victoria.
Gerry encourages Victoria to escape her father’s control, pursue her writing career and begin a new life in New York. Chase sees him as a threat to his carefully ordered world and shoots him, using his car telephone and an answering machine to construct an apparently airtight alibi.
And happy birthday Christopher Seiter
Producer and assistant director Christopher Nixon Seiter was born on August 9, 1935.
Seiter produced nine of the later Columbo television movies, including Death Hits the Jackpot, It’s All in the Game, Undercover, Strange Bedfellows, A Trace of Murder and Murder with Too Many Notes.
His connection to Laufer’s episode is especially appropriate for today: Seiter also served as a producer on Butterfly in Shades of Grey.
The son of director William A. Seiter and actress Marian Nixon, Christopher Seiter had a long career in film and television. His credits included work on Pete’s Dragon, The Black Hole, Murder, She Wrote and numerous other productions.
He died on December 17, 2003.
