365 Days of Columbo: March 25th

Double Shock first aired today in 1973

The biggest March 25th entry is easy: Double Shock premiered on NBC on March 25, 1973. It’s the one with Martin Landau pulling double duty as twin brothers Dexter and Norman Paris and of course Mrs. Peck on the warpath.

Happy Birthday Frank Baxter

Character actor Frank Baxter was born on March 25, 1922. He’s not one of the names Columbo fans are likely to remember, but attentive viewers will know him as one of those useful faces the series liked to recycle. He had three small appearances on Columbo (that we know about).

First off, in Season 1's Lady in Waiting, he's the executive who challenged Beth Chadwick at the meeting, but then decided he could "accomodate himself to her way of thinking."

He was back in Season 4's Playback as Officer Bronson.

And finally in Season 6's Fade in to Murder he's the network representative at lunch who argues against giving Ward Fowler more money.

Remembering Nancy Walker

March 25th is also the anniversary of the death of Nancy Walker, who died on March 25, 1992. Columbo fans will remember her for turning up as herself in Uneasy Lies the Crown, in that very odd celebrity-heavy poker sequence that people tend either to enjoy as a bit of time-capsule silliness or endure while waiting to get back to the murder.
