It’s March 2nd — and here’s what this date has meant in Columbo history over the years.
The debut of “Playback” (1975)
On March 2, 1975, NBC premiered Playback, the fifth
episode of Columbo’s fourth season. It’s one of the show’s slickest early-’70s
time capsules: a murder built around closed-circuit TV, reel-to-reel recording,
and the killer’s absolute faith that technology can outsmart an old-school
detective.
A fun bit of production lore: decades later, writer/producer
Joseph Mallozzi noted that “Playback” was Oskar Werner’s only television
appearance — and that Peter Falk reportedly traveled to Switzerland to persuade
him to take the role.
I haven't found any other Columbo events for March 2nd. If you know of one, share it in the comments below!
