Happy Birthday, Boris Sagal
Director Boris Sagal was born on October 18, 1923 in Ukraine. He directed two episodes of Columbo: The Greenhouse Jungle and Candidate for Crime. That gave him the opportunity to guide both Ray Milland’s scheming Jarvis Goodland and Jackie Cooper’s murderous politician Nelson Hayward through their encounters with the lieutenant.
Fun fact: His daughter Katey had a small party in Candidate for Crime...and a very big part years later in Married With Children.
Remembering Joel Beeson
Actor Joel Beeson died on October 18, 2017, at age 51 of congenital liver disease. He appeared as Clyde Windowski, the star rookie who wins the game, in A Bird in the Hand, the 1992 episode starring Tyne Daly and Greg Evigan.
Early in his career he had been a Chippendale dancer.
Kate begins a new chapter
On October 18, 1979, Ladies of the Afternoon opened the second season of the series that began as Mrs. Columbo, now presented as Kate Loves a Mystery. Kate Mulgrew’s reporter and amateur detective was moving away from her original connection to Lieutenant Columbo and establishing herself as Kate Callahan.
I don't pay a lot of attention to that series, because it's not Columbo. But if you try to ignore the failed Columbo tie-in it actually wasn't a bad show.
