365 Days of Columbo: March 11th

Happy Birthday Timothy Carey

Actor Timothy Carey was born on March 11, 1929. Columbo fans may not remember him as one of the series’ marquee guest stars, but he did pop up twice in the franchise as Bert: first in Ransom for a Dead Man and then again in Dead Weight. He was also Tony the deli owner in Fade in to Murder. That kind of repeat casting gives him a neat little place in early Columbo history, and it feels especially fitting because Carey was exactly the sort of offbeat, unforgettable character actor who could give even a small role some texture.

Happy Birthday Tricia O'Neil

Tricia O'Neil was born on March 11, 1945. She played Miss Cochran, the dog trainer in How to Dial a Murder. It’s a relatively small role, but in an episode packed with memorable business involving aggressive Dobermans, small roles matter.

O'Neil would go on to carve out a long and varied screen career, but March 11 is a nice excuse to remember her brief visit to the Columbo universe.

A birthday nod to Wallace Chadwell

Wallace Chadwell was born on March 11, 1927. His connection to the series comes in Étude in Black, where he is credited as the TV director. That is exactly the sort of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Columbo appearance that makes these day-by-day anniversaries so much fun: not every March 11 entry has to be a headliner.

Remembering Clive Revill

March 11 also carries a more somber association now. Clive Revill, who played Joe Devlin in The Conspirators, died on March 11, 2025. Revill brought a theatrical intelligence and sly charm to Devlin, helping turn Columbo’s final episode of the original NBC run into something distinctive and slightly dangerous. Devlin may not be every fan’s favorite murderer, but Revill’s performance is one of the main reasons the episode remains so memorable.
